What you’ll learn

Four short modules you can work through between jobs. In the last one, Smoko builds your local SEO setup.

  1. Search Basics

How customers find solar installers on Google today, and the shortcuts that do more harm than good.

    1. What is SEO?
    2. Why it matters?
    3. How Tradies Get Found Now
    4. Mistakes to Avoid

A Frankston homeowner types 'solar panels cost' and sees a comparison site, two national retailers and the map pack. Bulk backlinks won't get you into that map pack. A complete profile and real reviews can.

  2. Get on the Map

Set up your Google profile, categories and listings so locals searching for rooftop solar, home batteries and inverter replacements can find you.

    1. How Google Picks Local Results
    2. Your Google Business Profile
    3. Categories and Service Areas
    4. Keywords Your Customers Use
    5. Directories and Listings

Your profile says 'Electrician' because that's your licence. Set the primary category to Solar energy company, list home batteries as a service and upload last month's install photos, so battery searches can show you.

  3. What Makes You Rank

Service and suburb pages, reviews that show real work, AI answers, and a simple monthly check on results.

Questions solar installers ask

Can a small solar installer compete with the big national companies online?

National companies spend on ads and can have far more reviews than you, but the map results lean towards businesses close to the searcher. A profile with recent reviews from nearby suburbs and photos of real local roofs can sit alongside them. Your own suburbs are where you have the edge.

Should I have separate pages for solar and batteries?

Yes. People search for them differently: a new system, a battery added to an existing system, or a dead inverter replaced. One page for each job gives Google something specific to rank and gives the customer the answer they came for.

Do solar rebate pages help, or do they just bring tyre kickers?

Both. Rebate searches bring people early in their decision, so some will not buy. A clear page on the federal and state schemes that apply where you work builds trust, and gives the reader a reason to ring the installer who explained it. Keep it current, because the schemes change.

How do I show up when someone asks an AI for a solar installer near them?

Nobody outside those companies knows exactly how, but AI answers tend to draw on the same things Google does: your profile, your pages and your reviews. A page that plainly says which systems you install and which suburbs you cover helps. Keep your name, phone and address the same everywhere.

Should I make a page for every suburb I will drive to?

Only the ones you actually work in. A suburb page with photos of a real install, the system size and a line about the roof reads as genuine, and tends to do better than fifty near-identical pages. Start with the five or six suburbs where you have done the most jobs and add more as the photos come in.

Do I need a website for this?

Not to start. Your Google profile can do a lot on its own. If you have a website, Smoko drafts service and suburb pages for it from Tradie School's templates, for you to check.

I'm a one-person business. Is this worth it?

Yes. Someone searching for a tradie nearby wants the job done well, not a big crew. Smoko drafts everything from your answers and photos for you to check, so it doesn't eat your evenings.

How long until I show up higher?

No one can honestly promise a date or a spot. Google takes time to pick up changes, and every trade and area is different. This course helps you get the basics right and keep them right.

Will Smoko change my Google profile or website without asking?

No. Smoko drafts every change and shows it to you first. Nothing goes live until you approve it.
