What you’ll learn

Four short modules you can work through between jobs. In the last one, Smoko builds your local SEO setup.

  1. Search Basics

How customers find plumbers on Google today, and the shortcuts that do more harm than good.

    1. What is SEO?
    2. Why it matters?
    3. How Tradies Get Found Now
    4. Mistakes to Avoid

A homeowner with a burst pipe types "emergency plumber" and rings whoever shows up on the map first. Paying for fake reviews can get your profile restricted or suspended, and then the calls stop.

    12 min
  2. Get on the Map

Set up your Google profile, categories and listings so locals searching for hot water, blocked drains and gas can find you.

    1. How Google Picks Local Results
    2. Your Google Business Profile
    3. Categories and Service Areas
    4. Keywords Your Customers Use
    5. Directories and Listings

Your profile lists Plumber and Drainage service, plus Gas installation service if you're licensed for gas work, with your real service suburbs. If you really take after-hours calls, set your hours to match, so a local searching "blocked drain Blacktown" at 9 pm sees you're open.

    16 min
  3. What Makes You Rank

Service and suburb pages, reviews that show real work, AI answers, and a simple monthly check on results.

    1. Service Pages That Rank
    2. Suburb Pages Without the Spam
    3. Reviews That Move You Up
    4. Show Up in AI Answers
    5. Tracking What Works

A "Hot water system replacement in Blacktown" page with a photo of the 250 litre unit you swapped last Tuesday beats a generic Services page. A review that says "cleared tree roots from our sewer" tells Google and the next customer what you do. Once a month, check the calls and searches in your profile's performance.

    3. Approving Your Local SEO Setup

You send Smoko your licence number, suburbs and 20 job photos. It drafts your profile, a Blocked drains page and pages for the suburbs where you have real jobs to show; you fix the hours, swap a photo and approve before anything goes live.

Questions plumbers ask

Do plumbers really need SEO?

If customers find you by searching, yes. When a pipe bursts, people search Google Maps or ask an AI assistant. SEO decides whether they call you or the plumber down the road.

Why does a plumber with fewer reviews rank above me on the map?

Distance to the searcher, categories and how active the profile is all count, not just review totals. A profile with the right categories, recent job photos and replies to reviews can sit above a bigger one that has gone quiet.

How do I show up when someone asks ChatGPT for a plumber near them?

AI tools tend to draw on the same sources Google does: your Business Profile, your website and your reviews. Clearly listing the jobs you do, like hot water and blocked drains, with recent reviews that mention them, helps. Ask ChatGPT about your business now and then, and fix any wrong details on your site or profile.

Do I need a page for every suburb I work in?

Only for suburbs where you actually do jobs. A page built from real local work, such as a hot water swap in that suburb with a photo, tends to help. Twenty pages with the same text and a different suburb name swapped in tend to do more harm than good.

Should I pay for Google reviews to catch up to bigger plumbers?

No. Google removes paid or fake reviews and can stop your profile getting new ones, hide the ones you have or show customers a warning, and fake reviews can also breach Australian Consumer Law. Ask every customer after the job with a short message and your review link. A review that names the job, like a blocked drain or a hot water swap, tells the next customer more than a plain five stars.

Do I need a website for this?

Not to start. Your Google profile can do a lot on its own. If you have a website, Smoko drafts service and suburb pages for it from Tradie School's templates, for you to check.

I'm a one-person business. Is this worth it?

Yes. Someone searching for a tradie nearby wants the job done well, not a big crew. Smoko drafts everything from your answers and photos for you to check, so it doesn't eat your evenings.

How long until I show up higher?

No one can honestly promise a date or a spot. Google takes time to pick up changes, and every trade and area is different. This course helps you get the basics right and keep them right.

Will Smoko change my Google profile or website without asking?

No. Smoko drafts every change and shows it to you first. Nothing goes live until you approve it.
