A homeowner types 'deck builder' and sees map listings near the top of the page. Buying fake reviews or adding 'Brisbane' to your business name on Google risks a suspended profile, not more work.

What Makes You Rank
Service and suburb pages, reviews that show real work, AI answers, and a simple monthly check on results.

- Reviews That Move You Up

- Tracking What Works
A 'Decks' page showing six decks you built in Thornlands, each with a photo, the timber and the size, gives Google and a homeowner more to go on than a homepage listing 20 services. A review that names the job, like 'replaced our termite-damaged bearers', tells Google and AI assistants what you do. Once a month, check which pages brought calls.

Questions carpenters ask
Do carpenters really need SEO?
If customers find you by searching, yes. People look for a chippie on Google Maps or ask an AI assistant. SEO decides whether they find you or the carpenter down the road.
Should I list as a carpenter or a deck builder on Google?
Pick the category that matches most of your work as the primary one, usually Carpenter, then add Deck builder, Cabinet maker or Handyman/Handywoman/Handyperson as extras. Google weighs the primary category most, so if decks are most of your year, lead with Deck builder.
I work from a ute, not a shop. Can I still show up on the map?
Yes. Set your profile as a service-area business, hide the home address and list the suburbs you cover. The map tends to favour businesses close to the searcher, so a well filled out profile with recent deck and pergola photos helps, but you will show more strongly near home.
Can I get my carpentry business mentioned in ChatGPT or Google AI answers?
Sometimes, but nobody can promise it. AI assistants tend to draw on the same things Google reads: your profile, your service pages and your reviews. Pages that name the job and the suburb in plain words, like deck repairs in Frankston, and reviews that describe the work tend to help.
Do I need a separate web page for every suburb I work in?
No. Start with the suburbs where you have done real jobs and have photos to show for them. One page for pergolas in Ryde with three finished jobs on it tends to do more than ten pages with the same text and only the suburb name swapped in.
Do I need a website for this?
Not to start. Your Google profile can do a lot on its own. If you have a website, Smoko drafts service and suburb pages for it from Tradie School's templates, for you to check.
I'm a one-person business. Is this worth it?
Yes. Someone searching for a tradie nearby wants the job done well, not a big crew. Smoko drafts everything from your answers and photos for you to check, so it doesn't eat your evenings.
How long until I show up higher?
No one can honestly promise a date or a spot. Google takes time to pick up changes, and every trade and area is different. This course helps you get the basics right and keep them right.
Will Smoko change my Google profile or website without asking?
No. Smoko drafts every change and shows it to you first. Nothing goes live until you approve it.
