What you’ll learn

Four short modules you can work through between jobs. In the last one, Smoko builds your local SEO setup.

  1. Search Basics

How customers find landscapers on Google today, and the shortcuts that do more harm than good.

    1. What is SEO?
    2. Why it matters?
    3. How Tradies Get Found Now
    4. Mistakes to Avoid

A homeowner nearby types 'retaining wall builder' into Google and the map shows three landscapers with photos of walls. Buying 200 cheap backlinks will not put you there. Real job photos and a tidy profile can.

  2. Get on the Map

Set up your Google profile, categories and listings so locals searching for retaining walls, paving and turf laying can find you.

    1. How Google Picks Local Results
    2. Your Google Business Profile
    3. Categories and Service Areas
    4. Keywords Your Customers Use
    5. Directories and Listings

You run from home and drive to jobs. Hide the street address, set a service area of the suburbs you actually cover, and list the hours someone really answers the phone, not 24 hours because it looks good.

    16 min
  3. What Makes You Rank

Service and suburb pages, reviews that show real work, AI answers, and a simple monthly check on results.

    1. Service Pages That Rank
    2. Suburb Pages Without the Spam
    3. Reviews That Move You Up
    4. Show Up in AI Answers
    5. Tracking What Works

A single Services page listing 14 jobs says little about any one of them. A page titled Paving Castle Hill, with four of your own paving jobs, the stone used and what each one involved, gives Google and the customer something specific to match.

  4. Let's Implement: SEO Basics

Smoko drafts your local SEO setup from your answers and photos, you ask for changes, and you approve it.

    1. Smoko Builds Your SEO
    2. How to Edit or Improve with Smoko
    3. Approving Your Local SEO Setup

Smoko takes your answers and 20 phone photos and drafts your profile, a Retaining Walls page, a Turf page and pages for the suburbs where you have real jobs to show. You ask for changes, then approve before anything goes live.

Questions landscapers ask

Do landscapers really need SEO when most work is word of mouth?

Referrals still matter, but a referred customer can look you up on Google before they call, and someone new to the area has no one to ask. SEO is how you show up for the people who search 'landscaper near me' instead.

Should I have one page for landscaping or one for each job?

One for each job you want more of. A homeowner searching 'retaining wall builder' wants to see retaining walls, not a list of everything you do. Separate pages also let Google match you to that specific search.

How do I get found in the suburbs I want to work in, not just my own?

Google leans on where you are based, so you won't rank everywhere. Suburb pages that show real jobs and reviews from that area help, as does asking clients there for reviews that mention the suburb. It builds slowly, so give it time.

How do I get mentioned when someone asks ChatGPT for a landscaper?

Nobody outside those companies knows exactly how AI tools pick names, so be wary of anyone who says they do. They tend to draw on the same things Google does: clear service pages, a complete Google profile and reviews that name real jobs. Get those right first.

Why isn't my business showing in the map results for landscapers?

Often it's one of three things: your profile is missing a category like Landscaper, your name, phone and address differ across listings, or you have few recent reviews. Fix those and add photos of real jobs. Google also tends to favour businesses close to the searcher, which you can't change.

Do I need a website for this?

Not to start. Your Google profile can do a lot on its own. If you have a website, Smoko drafts service and suburb pages for it from Tradie School's templates, for you to check.

I'm a one-person business. Is this worth it?

Yes. Someone searching for a tradie nearby wants the job done well, not a big crew. Smoko drafts everything from your answers and photos for you to check, so it doesn't eat your evenings.

How long until I show up higher?

No one can honestly promise a date or a spot. Google takes time to pick up changes, and every trade and area is different. This course helps you get the basics right and keep them right.

Will Smoko change my Google profile or website without asking?

No. Smoko drafts every change and shows it to you first. Nothing goes live until you approve it.
